‘First Generation To Go To College’ Freshman paired with mentors in today’s ceremony
September 19, 2014
New Song Lutheran Church joined Henderson and Boulder City United Methodist Fellowship to launch the Nevada State College ‘First Generation To Go To College’ Freshman Mentoring Pilot Program. Mentors and mentees were paired up at today’s event hosted by Nevadans for the Common Good held at the Liberal Arts and Sciences building on the campus of Nevada State College.
The pilot program focuses on college freshman who are the first person in their family’s history to go to college. “The life and work of those retired from the workforce can help younger generations cultivate the skills needed for successful careers and thus success lives” says Pastor Marta Polling-Goldenne of New Song Church, “our volunteers believe that these relational connections between successful adults and college freshman can change lives and families in a positive way.”
The slogan of the NCG mentoring program is, “Continuing on a path of success with a guide by your side.” Mentor volunteers are retired professionals who have committed to complete 18 hours of volunteer work between August 2014 and May 2015. Mentors will meet with their mentees on campus a minimum of six times to offer support, advice and direction.
There are currently 20 mentors in the program and 24 mentees made up of freshman and sophomore Nevada State College students. Many of the mentors have backgrounds in education and most are long-time Nevada residents passionate about supporting New Song Church, Nevadans for the Common Good and Nevada State College.
